About 10 years ago, I was doing some contract work for a local company. I spoke with them about putting up a webcam. Now that same company has several streams and so do a lot of other local businesses.

Back then, it was fairly easy to set up a webcam and the cost was minimal; that is still true today. There are fish cams, panda cams, surf cams, ship cams, etc. Like it or not, web cams are becoming a part of our lives. Privacy issues have gone right out the window. I figure anyone who leaves their home to go anywhere will eventually be tracked all the way by various cams. It gets a little intrusive when you think about it. Everywhere we go, from weather cams to hidden cams placed for security purposes, society is becoming dependent on the results the cams provide. Now, our local governments have decided that they can make money from traffic light cams. Of course, they say that it is only for our protection at bad intersections. But, hey, it may make some drive slower and be more careful. I like that idea.

Because of the bandwidth needed to run a video stream, some of the web cams up now are not streaming real time; there is a brief delay. But, the ones with a live stream usually have only a second or two delay.

NOTE: Some of the Cam directories have personal webcam ads on their sites and you might run across some R-rated ones. So, I would never go searching through the directories without making sure the kids are out of the room. I have tried to select sites that don't have that problem, but things change and I cannot control who they link to or advertise on their sites.
